Garbage and Waste Removal

The City of Stratford’s Waste Reduction Program was initiated in the mid 1970's with a newspaper and a glass recycling collection depot. Since that time an aggressive waste reduction program has been implemented. The blue box depot collection system services all of Stratford’s residents and a majority of industrial and commercial generators. Special collections for appliances and household hazardous waste, leaf and yard waste, and large items are offered throughout the year.

Beginning in January, 1997, all municipally collected waste was paid for on a variable rate system (“Pay as you waste”) much like a utility. This initiative saw a 62% increase in recycling and a reduction in residential garbage of 35%. Decreased usage resulted in lower costs to the family or business generating the waste. All taxes associated with the collection and disposal of garbage were removed from the tax roll in 1997. Information on waste collection services, landfill site regulations and the recycling system is available through the Engineering Department.
